Mary Flynn is the heart behind Back Alley Gallery, a welcoming and vibrant space where art is not just seen but truly experienced. Mary has cultivated a gallery that feels less like a traditional art space and more like a community gathering place.
At Back Alley Gallery, the focus isn’t just on the artwork—it's on the connection it sparks. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned collector, you're greeted not just with a smile but with the invitation to engage, reflect, and connect with community.
Through thoughtfully curated exhibitions and inclusive events, Mary brings people together, celebrating diverse voices and creating opportunities for meaningful encounters with art and each other.
Mary is also co-founder of Art Circuit. Art Circuit is an exciting and fun evening of gallery hopping. A hop on/hop off bus experience that tours guests through four local galleries each hosting a unique exhibit featuring an exciting roster of local and international artists. We are now accepting submissions for three different shows.
The Back Alley Gallery is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 - 4:00PM Fridays are a casual gathering of like minded creatives. Some Fridays, we all experiment and play with the same media; it might be collage, resin, encaustic, or gelli pad fun. Other weeks, each person will bring in their own work. We've had everything from knitting, pottery, water colour, sculpture and more. Whatever we're doing, it's always a fun, informative way to connect and create.
Join us for exciting workshops at Back Alley Gallery! Our workshops are designed for artists of all levels to learn, create, and connect. Led by talented artists, each session covers a variety of techniques and mediums, offering something for everyone. Whether you're looking to refine your skills or try something new, you'll find a supportive and inspiring environment here. Come discover your creativity and be part of our vibrant artistic community!
Friday, October 3rd from 6-10pm
Join us for Art Circuit; a looping bus tour of 4 local Hamilton galleries hosting their opening receptions on the same evening.
We are now accepting submissions for Patterns, a group exhibition exploring the essential role of connections in our lives —how we build them, sustain them, and are nourished by them. Patterns evoke repetition, structure, memory, and the subtle ways relationships and connections form over time.
What does it truly look like to be part of something larger than yourself? How does connection, mutual care, and collective identity show up in your work or your world?
The title Patterns reflects both visual and conceptual rhythms—repeated gestures, generational knowledge, and the structures (visible or hidden) that hold us together.
The Back Alley Gallery is all about community, so feel free to drop in for a visit or call me at 289-683-1197 to make an appointment. Visit us at 341 Herkimer St (in the alley), Hamilton, ON
